Generic software fits every business equally badly. Sometimes you just need one extra field it never thought to include.

Off-the-shelf software has a familiar limitation: it's built for the average business in a category, which means it's never quite built for yours. A Gas Safe engineer needs to record an appliance serial number. A window cleaner needs to note which side of the building has the tricky access. Neither field exists by default, because the software wasn't built with your trade specifically in mind.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Without somewhere proper to put trade-specific information, it ends up in a general notes field - unsearchable, easy to miss, and impossible to report on. The information exists, it's just badly stored.

Adding the fields that matter to you

Custom task fields let a business add exactly the information it actually needs to a job - serial numbers, certification details, access notes - without waiting for a generic platform to eventually get round to it.

The verdict

You shouldn't have to bend your trade to fit the software. One well-placed custom field usually does more good than an entire extra tool would.
