The calculations that decide whether a job makes money - done properly, in your browser. No sign-up, no email, nothing stored.

CIS deduction calculator

Work out exactly what a contractor will deduct from a subcontractor invoice, and what actually lands in the bank. Handles materials, plant, travel, the CITB levy and the VAT reverse charge.

  • 0%, 20% and 30% deduction rates
  • Materials and plant taken out of the deduction base
  • Travel and subsistence handled the way CIS340 says
  • Works with the VAT domestic reverse charge

VAT reverse-charge checker

Eight questions that tell you whether the domestic reverse charge applies to a job, why, and what your invoice and VAT return need to say.

  • Follows s55A VATA 1994 and SI 2019/892
  • Covers end users, intermediaries and excluded services
  • Gives you the invoice wording to copy
  • Tells you which VAT return boxes to use

Day rate calculator

Turn the money you want to earn, your overheads and the days you can actually bill into a day rate that stands up - with the break-even underneath it.

  • Counts the days you lose to holiday, admin and quoting
  • Separates break-even from your target margin
  • Shows the hourly, half-day and day rate
  • Tells you what one empty day costs

Job pricing calculator

Price a single job line by line - labour, materials, plant, subcontractors, travel - and see the margin, the markup and the VAT before you send the quote.

  • Margin and markup side by side, correctly
  • Tells you the price that hits your target margin
  • Handles 20%, 5%, zero-rated and reverse charge
  • Flags a job that loses money

Per-user pricing calculator

Work out what per-seat job management software actually costs your team over a year, and see it against flat plan pricing as you take people on.

  • Handles a platform fee plus a price per seat
  • Shows the cost at 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 users
  • Compares against the published Pipeline plans
  • Uses your prices, not ones baked into the page

Why these are free, and why there is no email box

We build job management software for UK trades and service businesses, and these are the four calculations our customers were doing on the back of an invoice before they found us. They are useful whether or not you ever look at the product, so they are here with no sign-up and no email capture in front of them.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us, and nothing is stored - close the tab and it is gone. The rules behind them come from HMRC's own published guidance: CIS340 and the GOV.UK deduction guidance for the CIS calculator, and section 55A of the VAT Act 1994 with SI 2019/892 for the reverse-charge checker. Where a rule is a judgement call rather than arithmetic, the tools say so instead of pretending otherwise.

They are general information rather than tax or VAT advice. For anything unusual - mixed contracts, group structures, work that crosses a border - talk to your accountant.

Where to start

  • Being paid under CIS? Start with the CIS deduction calculator so you know what will actually land in the bank.
  • Not sure whether to charge the VAT? Run the job through the reverse-charge checker before the invoice goes out, not after.
  • Never sat down and worked out your rate? The day rate calculator is the one that changes how people price.
  • Quoting something big? Cost it line by line in the job pricing calculator and check the margin before you send it.
